Blog : Boots on the Ground in Syria... Like We Said

Boots on the Ground in Syria:

We first explained this would happen one year ago (October, 2014).  American troops are being deployed to Syria.

This is a mistake and a problem for several reasons.  ISIS fighters (which make up the "moderate rebels") want nothing more than to fight US forces.  They just don't have the resources to reach them... so bringing our boldest and bravest right to their doorstep is quite a win for Islamic State fighters.

Americans arriving in Syria is most welcome by ISIS, and fulfills one of their greatest dreams.  Even in death, they expect to be rewarded by at least attempting to fight back.

ISIS will find and engage US troops, and in any chaos there will be casualties and prisoners.  This is playing out exactly as the Korean and Vietnam wars have.

One of the major differences, however, will be the advanced, gruesome use of technology to show off any victories.  If American troops set foot on Syrian soil, ISIS will instantly get thousands more fighters.

If ISIS is able to capture an American and market their success, they will get tens of thousands more.  For example, much of Hezbolla is looking for a reason to join the conflict already.

American involvement in Syria by short-sighted, "never even been in a fist fight" politicians is strengthenning Islamic State.  This, after having created ISIS in the first place.  Here is another link (of many) which also explains that ISIS is an American product.

American POWs will be paraded in front of cameras, and likely tortured or killed. This will rally American sentiment (understandably), and politicians will garner support by committing greater troop counts.

More US soldiers will be sent 6,677 miles away to the tiny nation of Syria, which more than 80% of people can't point to on a map.

The saddest, most unfortunate thing for the actual heros who are getting thrown into this mess is that our troops are in Syria for the wrong reasons.  Assad is being pushed from power (very ineffectively thus far) by America because Syria is the last Iranian ally in the Middle East.

American involvement is also being added to offset Russian forces in Syria, thus completing the ingredients for a full-fledged proxy war.  American and Russian troops will be shooting at each other, and their drones will cross paths increasingly frequently.

We've seen how this is going to play out many times before.  Pretend it will be any different if you want, if that makes you feel better.  Why there is any US involvement in Syria makes absolutely zero sense (unless you believe propaganda or support the "Global Barracks" philosophy).

Meanwhile, American warships trying to "show muscle" in the South China Sea is resulting in militarization of the disputed islands by China.  If you walk around with a big stick, others might be inclined to pick up some clubs of their own.

I'm not sure what ever happened to justified war, but that has become a relic of the past.    We can not "prevail", whatever that might look like, with disputes with China and Russia.

The ancient Aboriginal proverb rings true in this case, as it always does:

"If you chase 2 rabbits, both will escape."
